No Craig, Takashi’s right.
Prompted by this post detailing 9 Traumatizing Moments from Classic Kids Movies I bring you a small spam of formative movie from my childhood. Onwards!

Robin Hood (1973)
OMG the whistling! Jamie & I use to whistle along every time. And Prince John with the thumb sucking? AWESOME!

Summer School
This was on tv a lot in the summer. I watched it many many times. I watched it again recently and I never really realized how truly bad this movie is.

The Princess Bride
Yet this movie holds up after (yikes!) 20 years. Who else pronounces the words "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." when seeing Mandy Patinkin? EVERYONE RIGHT?!?!

Harry and the Hendersons
This movie made me afraid of my basement for a very long time. I was terrified that if I went to the basement in the dark that Harry would get me! I have yet to see this as an adult, and likely never will.

Willow
I saw this in Ontario with my mom and Aunt Jennifer. Madmartigan may have been my first movie crush. I have this memory seared into my brain forever onwards: sitting between my mom & aunt, during the scene in the castle when the Willow's crossing the bridge and then he puts the baby down AND BAM!! THERE'S A TROLL RIGHT BEHIND HIM!! Both my mom and my aunt jump and grab for me. I swear to god I jumped 2 feet out of my seat!! Seared into my brain I tell you!

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
I will love this movie forever. I will quote this movie forever. It is kind of a family affair, we all went and saw it in the theatre when it was released. I think my brother & I were the only kids that got the Soh-Krates/Beeth-Oven joke. Not too long ago my mom posted on facebook "Something's afoot at the Circle K" and we proceed to have a Bill & Ted fest.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
This was my introduction to the awesomess that is Alan Rickman. He was fantastic as the Sheriff and when asked why he's going to cut Robin Hood's heart out with a spoon he answers "Because its dull, you twit, it'll HURT MORE!". It also introduced me to the movie soundtrack, though that might just have coincided with the year I started band.

Aladdin
My favouritest of the new-school non-computer animated Disney movies. How can you not love it? Aladdin, Abu, Genie? AWESOME! I can also still sing along to the whole thing.
State of the Liz: January Edition
I have plans, and ideas, and watch & read so many things, and make things. I hardly document my processes or thoughts about these things. We've had some "leadership" traning here at work, a Robin Sharma course. Its about setting goals & time management and this has prompted me to start what I hope will be an actual monthly occurance. Self reflection is not something I am good at, so I'm starting with the superficial things and we'll see how it goes ;D Prepare for the longwindedness!
105 new episodes of TV
Best New Series? Miranda! OMG so hilarious, I haven't laughed that hard watching tv in a very long time. (In fact it was probably Arrested Development that I enjoyed as much as this.) And who doesnt have/want a Gary (who looks a lot like Ben Chaplin)? Downton Abbey was also really good, happy to hear there is a second season in production. I like upstairs/downstairs shows, I like to see both ends of the class spectrum. Loved Mr Bates (such a stand up guy) & the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith is almost always great) and poor Daisy. Most Pervasive Series? Top Gear. I keep having dreams I'm driving a stick shift, really really fast. Its become my "DVR it and watch it when nothing else is on" show.
Really annoyed that there's only been 2 new episodes of shows returning after the Christmas break. BBT & HIMYM I'm looking at you! Why bother airing a new episode one week, a repeat the next, then a new episode then a repeat? Why not just wait the 2 weeks and show then back to back? Frustrating. But very very happy that Republic of Doyle is back. It is a great Canadian show, and I haven't seen near enough love for it. Allan Hawco is so dreamy, just lovely really. Love the new Sarah Richardson show, I like that she did an Ikea kitchen.
8 Movies to date:
Sadly lacking in this department. Could be my massive intake of television this month. None of them were particularly good, maybe that has something to do with it. I keep recording them, then not watching them. I seem to think that the time investment is too much, that I'd rather watch a couple tv shows instead. I think I need a run of great movies to change that.
19 "Books" to date:
Along with the 3 non-graphic novels/comic books I have going I finished the whole of the Preacher series of graphic novels. That was amazing, weird, grotesque, violent, awesomeness. So, so good. Though in discussing it with Sean (who I borrowed them from) found out I have weird tolerances for things. The killings and the violence I had no problem with, the inbreeding I could handle but the bulimic Allfather, head of the Grail? Nope, couldnt handle that at all.
I've got almost a dozen volumes of the Fables series down, but from what I hear it gets crap shortly after the bit that I'm at now. The idea behind this series was interesting but I'm not reading it as voraciously as I thought I would. I couldnt put Preacher or Walking Dead or Y: the Last Man down when I read them. This ones only alright.
I'm currently re-reading Good Omens for the upteenth time, always a good read. Shirley found a copy of Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood that had been left at the hospital & gave to me to read. Besides the comics this has been what else I've been focusing on. Lastly, in an effort to get in gear/off my ass & get my crafty shop in order I've bought Handmade Marketplace and Craft Inc. These will probably be ongoing reads but have been interesting so far. Definately get me motivated to do something about it already.
3 completed crafty projects, 4 started projects:
After losing my favourite mittens on the way home from Christmas holidays, I made up 2 new pairs. One was out of some wool I had around, they're thicker but I'm not happy with the pattern I followed, the way it decreased for the fingers, too pointy. They've been put in the pile of other non-favourite mitts. The other ones were an attempt to make mitts that had a hole in them so I can use my iPhone, and I had some cool Noro Kuryeon-like yarn to use. They are ok, the hole for my finger is too low, i followed the pattern instead of measuring for myself. They've become my day-to-day mitts, but as they're made with acrylic they're starting to pill already. Boo.
Finished a blanket/throw I started ages ago, circles in squares in bright colours. Thought I was making it for myself, but think it will end up being a present for someone. With this thought I bought more yarn for another blanket/throw to be another present. Finally decided on a pattern for the squares and have got 4 of the 16-20 that I will probably need to make it the size I want.
I participated in a Craftster swap this month, a matchbox swap. About my speed for a 2nd swap. I made 2 boxes, decorated them, filled them & sent them off. That was fun, I got to use some of the magazines I'd cut up & saved. And in an effort to document/followup on things I started modifications of a Moleskin notebook. I can never find a pocketbook calendar/daytimer that I am happy with, I usually end up making one from a notebook. Last year I did one with a Moleskine with blank pages and liked having the blank pages. When I started this position I no longer needed to keep track of my shifts so it fell by the wayside, really only used for grocery lists. So when I bought the vcrafty books I got a new one to start over. I've got my monthly calendars set, just need to get the weekly pages done.
On the decks for February
TV: Really need to finish Battlestar Galactica, I am starting to dislike not reading anything BSG related for fear of being spoiled. Also should finish Black Books
Movies: Family coming down for my birthday so there should be a few movie viewings those days. There's a lot that's PVR material, its just a matter of actually watching them!
Books: "finish" Fables, finish Alias Grace, start Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin before the tv show starts.
Crafty: Defo finish the daytimer/notebook. Thats the first on the list, & then putting it in to practice. Maybe another craftster swap, they're fun to do but we'll see what the board offers. I want to get the squares for the new blanket if 75-100% done, then I can work on burrying threads & sewing it together in March.
You almost got me
Happy 2011 everyone!
Instead of going to bed I decided to torture myself and check out apartment rentals in town. All I have to say is FUCK BASEMENT SUITES! Seriously, the only way I can afford to move out of my little bachelor (and still not have to have a roommate) is if I get a sizeable raise or rent prices drop dramatically.
I found one place that's reasonably within my price range, this "bachelor" further away from work than I already am, but in a cute character building. And this one I love, its in another weird character building & has great floors but is beyond my price range. And yet, for the same price I could live in someone's basement. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! I dont care how many windows it has, you're still living in someone else's basement.
And with that depressing search I am going to bed.
space is so pretty!
I feel like quite an idiot right now. How did I not know that the theme music from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was just the theme music from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"? Almost the same, note for note. How didn't I know this? Man, the Grand High Geek Authority™ should take away my geek badge.
Thanks to a friend from work I have discovered wimp.com. It's pretty awsome. From the site "we feature all kinds of videos: funny, educational, inspirational, cute, science, news, pretty much anything we think that might add 'value' to your life in some shape or form." Total time waster, but in a better way than most. Oh! This advent calendar is pretty awesome too. From the guy who edits The Big Picture at the Boston Globe, it's the 2010 Hubble Space Telescope Advent Calendar. Its the 3rd year in a row and everyday just blows me away. Not to sound too dumb, but space is so pretty!
after all, its shareware!
I have a bruise on the side/back of my head. Its like I hit my head, but I dont remember hitting my head. But I dont know if I dont remember hitting my head because I hit my head. See my conundrum? Nothing to do with my concussion, I bought my first BluRay disc this week, How To Train Your Dragon. Saw it in theatres and it still holds up, such a great great movie. Also, this icon? My favourite bit of the movie, by far.
In preparation for a 30 day music meme, how bout a meme ganked from entwashian? OK!
Song you could listen to on repeat forever
Prelude - Suite For Unaccompanied Cello 1 (Bach) by Béla Fleck from Perpetual Motion.
I have no words to express how much I love this particular piece of music. I love it on cello but it is a little bit more awesome on banjo.
Favorite cover of a song
Safety Dance - Glee Cast
I loved the original and have been totally grooving to this version. Though London Calling by Captain Tractor is great too.
Song that reminds you of high school
SPICE GIRLS!! Wannabe or If U Can't Dance
Song that reminds you of your favorite fandom
Driftwood - Travis
or any other Travis for that matter reminds me of my beloved MonaBoyd.
Song that reminds you of someone you love
Canadian Skye - Spirit Of The West
Song that gets you up in the morning
Casual Viewin' - 54-40
Its an upbeat song, but not blaring. Perfect for first thing in the morning.
Song you listen to when you're sad
Follow - Captain Tractor
Makes me want to just drive away.
Song that reminds you of your family
Electric Avenue - Eddie Grant
As a kid my family would clean the house to this record. We'd come home from school and hear this blaring and know it was job time.
Song you know all the lyrics to
Family Reunion - blink182
uh, NSFW. Its pretty much George Carlin's 7 dity words you can't say on tv.
Song you wouldn't normally admit is in your music collection
Dixie Chicks? Yup, too much Dixie Chicks. Sin Wagon, Wide Open Spaces, Cowboy Take Me Away.
oh, that’s nothing!
Been distracted lately, bought a Playstation 3 couple weeks ago. Its a used one, but man, I dont know why I put off buying one so long! Grand Theft Auto is always fun and Blur is my favourite game (despite the weird online game glitches). Beatles Rock Band is my next splurge. Also been distracted with the new TV season. Enjoyed the pilot of My Generation, interesting premise that has promise, The Event is just way to meh for me, Mike & Molly is just too cute, and I think Chase is my new favourite cop show (Cole Hauser? *growl*!) Also got sucked right in reading Inception fic. And it drives me nuts when the writer alludes to or outright writes an interpretation of the ending that I dont agree with. And for the record
And I think I've decided, if I can find the right colour green yarn, that I've found a "costume" for Halloween. It's geeky and easy. And sure, cheating a little bit. It does give me an excuse to just sit and stare for a while. AND TALK IN A SLIGHTLY LOUD MONOTONE VOICE AS WELL.
Random things that have caught my attention lately:
- geekiest PIN numbers. mine is partly in here.
- incredible post it drawings
- Awwww!!
- Old news, but Ron Howard + Stephen King = what could be a pretty awesome adaptation of the Dark Tower books.
- Hey brother.
- The hysterical laughter reminds me of when Charlene and I attempted to walk the cat Hero on a leash. He was just as happy with it as this dog was. And we were laughing just as hysterically!
- I love to knit but this awesome knitting tattoo takes that love just a little to far for me. They can't just wear their knits?
- This was ages ago now but ZAPHOD BEEBLEBROX at FanExpo! That zarkin frood! Also impressed with the MegaMan near the bottom.
- great review of Josie & the Pussycats. The My Year Of Flops series of articles is fun if you're bored at work. Not that I've ever been bored at work. Never!
- Collection of posters from Everyday Posters Every day
Money, jewels, secrets of the universe
Been MIA lately, no real reason, just nothing really to post. Watched a season and a half of Vernoica Mars, it was playing on Cosmo TV & I enjoyed it. Really dont like Duncan, but have a love/hate love of Logan. Egh, they got like 6 episodes into the 2nd season then mid-week went to 5 into the 3rd season! WTF! I sent them an angry email and got some really badly formatted form email back from them. So now I'm boycotting Cosmo. Also started watching BSG, plan on marathoning the rest of the first season this weekend. I watched season 4 of Doctor who, I love Donna Noble but really dont like David Tennant's Doctor. I much prefer the 11th one. Yah, Tennant is my least favourite Doctor.
Been reading a lot. Finished a few books including Fool by Christoper Moore. Pretty funny, Pocket is a great fool. One of the supervisors leant me his Sony book reader thing so I could read the latest Dresden book. The book was great, one of the best of the series, but not having tangible pages to turn? A little weird. Some of the guys from work also got me into The Walking Dead, comic books about people surviving a zombie apocalypse. I'm not much into zombies, but I love me an apocalypse! AMC is making a tv show out of it, it starts on Halloween, so I wanted to read as much as I could before it started. Its pretty incredible, the crap these people have been through, what they put each other through. I'm really looking forward to the premiere.
Otherwise not much is up. Work is good, keeps me busy and gets me stat holidays off (woo long weekends!) Heh, had a headache for 2 days strait and realized it was caffeine withdrawal. I'd been drinking Monster coffee energy drinks every morning for a few weeks and decided it was more like a ginger ale day for a couple days. Bad idea. I didnt realize how much they really affected me! I got all cranky and tired and headachey. But instead of just waiting out the withdrawal I had one today! heh, I'll never learn ;D
Now here, enjoy some random links I enjoyed this past week-ish.
- This guy has made some amazing animation/videos here. This one in particular is amazing!/li>
- Making the rounds this week, but this is a brilliant video of dancing in movies, really well done.
- If historical events had Facebook statuses. The Church? Thinks we've been drinking & smoking too much.
- Why we should be scared of Happy Meals. Someone photographed a Happy Meal for 137 days. Looks the same on day 1 as it does on day 137 eww.
- The 10 greatest fictional inventors of all time. Made me happy to see Brain on the list.
- Crazy short story about time travel.
- The Sci-Fi eye test. I could only figure out 9 of the 36. Though that could be because my eyes are bad.
- Ha! Star Trek: The Next Generation casting notes. I'm sure this has been everywhere, but Wesley Snipes as Geordi? YIKES! Though Yaphet Kotto as Picard would have been interesting.
- Bird friendly glass. Cuts down on the number of birds flying into buildings. Pretty cool.
- I may not have caught the Perseid meteor shower on my holidays, but this video is a nice compromise. Hit HD & view fullscreen, it's amazing! The same guy has done some other time lapse videos, definitely worth checking out. I wish I knew how to convert videos to screensavers cause this would be AWESOME!
- Dude, it's a history of the word "dude".
- If Silicon Valley had been founded in Calgary, it would reach halfway to Banff! Plug in your own postal code, you can see how big, really, things are.
- And finally, this 3 year old kid can recite more poetry from memory than I can!
virulent virus
I have a pet peeve and a bad habit that go hand in hand. It drives me crazy when people mis-pronounce words or use the wrong one (they think they know what they mean, but they dont). I twitch a little bit then immediately correct them. Pet peeve, bad habit. There's this running gag at work, one of the guys says he's going have ganache with a nice tomato sauce for dinner. He really means gnocchi but knows it drives me nuts. Or today, someone said their band played a song called Virulent. He pronounced it vie-yer-you-lent (like virus). I corrected him, its veer-you-lent (or veer-uh-lent) and then had an argument over who was right ending in furious googling to prove who was right. I was (of course). So yes, a pet peeve & bad habit that go hand in hand.
actually it was the guard
How 'bout a meme instead of a real entry? OK!
1. My username is ______ because ______.
My username is hepcatliz because I couldnt get liz, or liz156. Hepcat was from my very first days on the 'net, I think even because there was a Hepcat CD on the desk when I signed up for my first email account. So when I can't be liz somewhere I'm hepcatliz.
2. My name is _____ because ______.
My name is Liz because Elizabeth is too long. No, I'm Liz because I have been since I was 12. I don't really remember why I decided to be Liz, my mom was adamant growing up that I'd always be Elizabeth. I was during grade school, but by high school I was Liz, and have been ever since.
3. My journal is titled ____ because ____.
My journal is titled "The continuing adventures of The Girl in Calgary" because I moved to Calgary 4 years ago. I was doing the
4. My friends page is called ____ because ____.
My friends page is called "Gonna see all the wonders of the Universe" because, well I dont know. Its a lyric from an Imani Coppola song "Legend of A Cowgirl". It's a fantastic song and I love that line.
5. My default userpic is ____ because ____.
My default userpic is "Don't mind me, I'm just mourning LOST" because LOST is over!
Both so striking!
Here, have a list of things I've been thinking about!
- Have a little pyromaniac in you, but don't want to commit arson? Play with this! It's a fire simulator drawing thing, its really rather satisfying.
- I have no interest in see The Karate Kid. And besides, he's not a karate kid, he's a kung-fu kid. Each time I see the trailer for Take Me To The Greek I want to see the movie less and less. I had seen posters and hadnt heard much about it. Then I saw the trailer the first time and though "ok, I hate Jonah Hill but this could be amusing". Now, not so much. He just grates on my so, so much.
- The LOST finale was awesome! I was totally happy with the ending, I was really afraid that my hopes would be to high and I would be disappointed. I should have known better, the show has never let me down. I cried at each "awakening", and bawled with Sawyer & Juliet at the vending machine, oh and with Charlie and Claire! Heh not to mention the last shot, as much as I disliked Jack, it was a great ending. It answered enough questions for me and everyone had a happy ending. The DVD for the season is coming out in August, I am looking forward to rewatching the whole series now, knowing how it ended. Should be good.
- There are some things afoot at work. Exciting things. They are just starting and as much as I want to talk about them, there some secrecy involved. Ok, not secrecy but on the down-low for sure. I know, I know, why bother hinting if I cant actually talk about it? Well I'm just excited about it is all. OMG and its been sooooo busy at work these past 2 weeks. Insane busy. But it makes the day go by fast, which is good.
How 'bout a meme? From
1 - Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 - I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3 - You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 - You'll include this explanation.
5 - You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.
1 - What will you miss most about Lost? The whole thing! It was such an amazing show, I was thinking, there were 121 hours of the show made and I have spent easily twice that amount thinking, watching, reading, theorizing, babbling about this show in the 6 years its been on. The sci-fi element was awesome, but the characters were what kept me watching. So maybe I'll miss finding out what happened when they got off the island, or the adventures of Hurley & Ben. :D
2 - What is the awesomest thing you have ever made? Recently I'd have to say my suit jacket bag. I'm pretty proud of that. Other than that I've made some sweet origami Christmas ornaments, star like things. They're pretty cool too.
3 - What store/restaurant/etc do you always have to resist dropping in to spend a little cash whenever you pass by? Second Cup. When I leave early enough from home I have some time to kill before heading to work, so I'll get a coffee. Also Michaels/any yarn store. And for this reason I dont just browse these ones, I will go to pick something up specific or all my money would be spent there. heh, even when I have a purpose I still spend too much.
4 - Are you more of a sci fi or fantasy person? I think Sci-fi, but only marginally so. I was talking with someone at work about this. I can get in to fantasy as long as the story/characters/world/etc have some grounding in this world. It can end up being totally crazy, but if it doesnt have a grounding here then I cant really get in to it.
5 - What is the best thing about Human Target? Christopher Chance, and by extension Mark Valley. If he wasnt playing Chance I dont know if the show would be as good. He is really great in it, he's the perfect action guy, the perfect comedy guy, the perfect weird romantic guy. I am very happy Fox decided to pick up a second season. For once Fox did something right!
